Current interests include coronary bypass and valvular surgery. Dr. Hirsch has a long standing interest in mitral valve repair techniques. Dr. Hirsch did his training in Cardiac Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and was a research fellow in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. He has practiced Cardiac Surgery in Halifax since his recruitment to the Maritime Heart Centre in 1995.

Dr. Hirsch has been Head, Division of Cardiac since 2005. He is dedicated to continuing the vision of his predecessor, Dr. John Sullivan, in offering our patients access to cardiac surgical care of the highest quality. Under Dr. Hirsch’s leadership, the Maritime Heart Center has engaged in the continuous quality improvement program that feeds back on a constant basis both early and late outcomes of all of our patients, giving the surgeons of the Maritime Heart Center the information needed to provide the best possible outcomes from their cardiac surgical procedures.

Dr. Hirsch also has an interest in the biology of transplant rejection, and has a CIHR funded laboratory effort in collaboration with Dalhousie Immunologist, Dr. Timothy Lee.
