
Dr. John Sullivan
Dr. John Sullivan was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He attended public school, graduating from St. Patrick’s High School and then St. Mary’s University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree. He then went on to Dalhousie Medical School and graduated with an MD in 1974. He was in general practice in Inverness, Nova Scotia, from 1974-76 and then returned to train at Dalhousie where he obtained his Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery in 1981. He subsequently did a Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in 1981.
Dr. Sullivan was Head of the Division of Cardiac Surgery in Halifax from 1995-2005. He was President of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. He instituted the Cardiac Transplant Program in Halifax in 1988. He is the recipient of the Medical Staff Achievement Award for the QEII Health Sciences Centre in 2002 and a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for outstanding service to his community and his country in 2002. In addition, he is the 2006 recipient of the Faculty of Medicine Community of Scholars Award of Excellence in Clinical Practice.
He has practiced adult cardiac surgery in Halifax since 1981 and his research interest is in myocardial protection and right ventricular dysfunction.
