PUTTING THE ‘HEART’ IN ‘HEARTY MEAL’!

Gala fundraisers are an important fixture in any charity’s fundraising calendar.  But they’re not for everyone.  It’s not easy finding space in the budget for a $200-a-plate dinner.  Maybe you don’t feel like dressing up for a four-hour philanthropic marathon.  And what if you don’t like the food?  It’s all for an AMAZING cause, it’s true, but gala-fatigue can easily set in.

Wouldn’t it be great instead to hit up your fave restaurant with your fave people, grab a bite and be content in the knowledge that a percentage of your food bill will automatically be donated to charity? You get to dine where you want, with whom you want, and eat what you want – and still raise money!  No muss, no fuss – the resto takes care of the delicious food AND the charitable act.  And what better excuse to order desert?! “Don’t judge my double-chocolate cake – it’s for charity!”
That’s exactly what happened with EAT YOUR HEART OUT, HALIFAX, a novel new annual fundraiser to support the Maritime Heart Center.
On Tuesday 24th April 2012, 16 restaurants around our fair city came together for one common cause – to fight heart disease in the Maritimes.  On this one night, these incredibly generous establishments donated 15% of food sales to the Maritime Heart Center!
It’s a great concept.  Pick a spot, pick a group of people and dine out.  Or as we like to say – “Raise Your Fork – Raise Some Money!” It doesn’t matter whether you spend $10 or $100, because this happens at multiple restaurants around the city so the fundraising will be significant.  It gives you a chance to try a restaurant you haven’t been to before.  If you feel like dressing up or you want to use the evening to celebrate a special occasion, you can choose a fine-dining restaurant.  If you want to get the work team together, go with a casual, trendy spot. Or if you just want some low-key beer n’ nachos, then pick a local pub.  Just be sure that your indulgence is part of a considered, heart-healthy diet!  Or, pick one of the healthier menu options – all our participating restaurants have them!

The BEST charity events are the ones that benefit ALL who participate – and nothing achieves this like EAT YOUR HEART OUT!
EAT YOUR HEART will get bigger and better every year.  Look out for an expanded list of participating restaurants for 2013… and more restaurants in other urban centres around the province!
Finally… let’s not forget the generosity of the restaurants who are donating.  Next time you feel like dining out (and if you’re like us, that will be soon… is it dinnertime yet?!) please consider frequenting one of the following establishments.  They are supporting our communities… so we should support them!

CTV’s Kate Udel gets out to the street to get a personal view of the new heart healthier take on pizza. The flavours are amazing. Roast Chicken with Fig and carmelized onion & dandelion greens- just to get started…   But after you watch the segment- get on down quickly- bc Morris East doesn’t take reservations- so first come- first to enjoy their new twists!

Yes- The economy shoe shop has a slight renovation! They are making more seating- the bar area in the Diamond will now be serviced through the Backstage- which frees up more space for all the EAT YOUR HEART OUTers!  This isn’t the first time that argyle cobblers has changed there floor plan- but it always keeps it’s great ambience with a very eurpean feel.

There are other changes too- we have just heard they have a new edition to their current culinary team. And we are excited- Chef Matthew Costain has a fantastic paring of food and a love for great flavour to boot! He was the Executive Chef at many prestigious places including the Press Gang right here in our city.
