Maritime Heart Center

Residency

We have arranged for training fellowships at Boston Children’s Hospital in Pediatric Surgery and at Leipzig Germany vis complex and minimally invasive valve repair with Frederick Mohr. The possibility exists for inter-provincial and/or international electives sometime during training but we feel that the great majority of clinical training should occur on site.

We have seven full time staff cardiac surgeons, one part time staff cardiac surgeon, there are three cardiac anesthetists assigned to the CVICU and are directly involved in resident education, one biostatistician (MSc), data base help with outcomes researach projects/manager. Three of the full time staff have basic science labs. There are two affiliated basic scientists (PhD) with lab efforts in neurocardiac phyusiology and transplant biology as well as several other basic science and epidemiology/biostatistic collaborators at the PhD level. There are currently seven residents with two of these in full time research.

Average patient load varies extensively – on the majority of the services there is a team approach rather than individual patients assigned to a given resident. The cardiac surgical service runs about 40 patients including ICU. This service is staffed by one to four residents plus full time ICU staff and three nurse clinicians assigned to the floor.
