The 5th Annual HeartLand Tour criss-crosses across Nova Scotia for 8 days this July to raise public awareness of heart disease and promote heart-wellness for all…and it hits Halifax Central Common on Saturday July 9th!

The day consists of group bike rides (varying levels) and fun and games on the common.  It’s all FREE, so come along and join the fun!

FULL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

GUIDED GROUP BIKE RIDES:

Please note: registration and waivers are required to take part in all the group rides.  You can register in advance on the HeartLand Tour website, or register on the day.  Children under 18 will require a waiver completed by their parent or guardian.

8AM – Depart for 96km ride to PEGGY’S COVE (difficult)

This is a 97 Km ride from central Halifax to Peggy’s Cove and back, departing from Robie St. at Cogswell.  On the way to Peggy’s Cove, there are rolling hills with a few steep climbs along Prospect Road. On the way back into the city, through Tantallon, the terrain is flatter.   This ride is intended for experienced cyclists who can ride at least 25 km per hour.

10.30AM – Depart for 26km ride to PURCELL’S COVE (moderate)

Departure is from the Halifax Central Common, Robie Street at Cogswell.  We’ll travel east on Cogswell, turn right onto Trollope, right onto Bell Road, then head out of town via Quinpool Road. We’ll navigate through the Armdale Roundabout and head up Herring Cove Road. Turn left onto Purcell’s Cove Road. Travel to the community of Herring Cove. We’ll take a short break at St. Paul’s Church. We’ll head back to town along Herring Cove Rd. We’ll regroup in the parking lot just before the intersection of Herring Cove and Purcell’s Cove Roads. We’ll travel together for the last leg along Quinpool Road. We’ll finish where we started at Halifax Central Common!

12.30pm – Depart for 8km CITY RIDE (easy, safe and suitable for all)

This is a 8 km ride through the city core, intended for cyclist of all ability. The ride starts and finishes at Central Common – Robie St. at Cogswell.

ACTIVITIES ON THE CENTRAL COMMON:

12.10PM – Yoga

Never tried yoga?  Come along for a free session and learn how this ancient discipline can contribute to overall health and wellness.

12.30pm – Heart and Stroke Foundation Walkabout

If cycling isn’t for you, join in the heart-wellness walkabout to get your heart pumping!

1.30pm – Children’s Activities as part of the Youth Challenge!

Especially for kids of all ages, a series of challenges including running, cycling and heart-health trivia.  Kids collect tokens to WIN A BIKE!
