The Maritime Heart Center is the only surgical pediatric cardiac center serving all of Maritime Canada with a catchment of approximately 2 million people. One in 1000 children are born with a congenital heart anomaly requiring surgical intervention. More children are surviving into adulthood after repair of their heart conditions and many will require further intervention in adulthood. The entire range of neonatal, pediatric and adult congenital heart surgeries are performed at the IWK and the QEII with the exception of pediatric heart transplants. Approximately 120 pediatric and 20 adult congenital heart surgeries are performed each year.
